In the service industry, this is two-fold – where the company itself wishes to place itself in the world, where the client’s company wishes to place its own self in the world, and also, where any outside organizations needed to accomplish company goals wishes to place themselves in the world. These facets determine the force of the direction that the company will go, and hence what direction it wants to take its clients. This includes a study of not only goals, but strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats, inside and outside factors that may help or hinder it, etc. This type of planning is strategic, and requires an intelligent and perceptive administration to properly assess.

  2. Organize: Proper organization is dependant on both an organization’s business plan and the success of the outcome of Management. This step includes preparation of resources, both of staff and of finances, in order to carry out the business plan. There are numerous levels of relationships to consider during plan organization – the relationship between the client company and the service company, interdepartmental relationships, and the relationship between the service company and any outside forces (supplies, finances, governmental permits, taxes, etc.) with which it must interact in order to efficiently carry out its Plan. Proper organization requires a comprehensive plan, so that most, if not all, contingency factors are integrated into the seamless completion of the outcome; which is what these four steps all lead to.

  3. Direct: Proper direction is dependant on the human element. Staff members, governmental agency employees, the client’s spokesperson, etc. each have their own humanity that they bring to the table. A well-chosen staff is one whose personal goals tally well with the goals of the company, and the goals of the position which each person holds. Part of direction is the application of planning, organizing, and control, but also incentives and other factors of motivation that spur each employee to offer his or her best to the completion of each goal within the plan, thereby seamlessly fulfilling the entire plan with a minimum of hassles and inefficiency. This requires an atmosphere of trust in communication, both from management to staff and from staff to management, to maximize productivity and job satisfaction, important ingredients to a quality product or service and corporate stability.

  4. Control: Control involves the reporting and evaluation of performance, not only of employees, but management and even the steps of the Plan itself. There are also budget requirements, both of the service & client companies, and the different departments whose interaction is required for the success of the outcome. Without proper direction, control is not possible. Without proper organization, direction and control is not possible. And a properly constructed business plan is the foundation that holds the house together. Each of these four steps is not only important in itself, they are important as a whole to the success of any company.
